Far Away
For Advanced Scenic Design
By Caryl Churchill
Far Away is a 4 person dystopian play based on the premise in which everything in nature is at war.
What really interested me with this play was the relationship between the industrial with nature and people and specifically it made me think about what happens in a culture of dilapidated industry. As a dystopian piece I got really interested in expressing the collapse of industry. This ended up with a central focus on rusting metal and layers of rusting metal. I was specifically drawn to the contrast of the redness of rust against a cool blue paint. The set then became an abstraction of this with a container of layers of never ending shipping containers with a central farm house built of layers of corrugated metal that raises and lowers to create the different locations as described in the script.
