Make Way For Ducklings
July 2024
Hangar Theatre | Ithaca, NY
Music and Lyrics by William Yanesh
Make Way for Ducklings is a TYA Musical adapted from the 1940's children's book by Robert McCloskey about a family of ducklings searching for a home in Boston around the vicinity of the Boston Commons and Beacon Hill.

The production was done in an outdoor venue as a part of the Hangar's Kid-stuff series in which the show is built and teched in a week and a half.

Make Way for Ducklings is aesthetically a very captivating children's book with a unique illustrative style of sepia copied charcoal sketches. This element was incredibly important for me, as I wanted the set to feel like the book come to life. As a creative team we were excited to lean into the 1940's origin of the book with the direction following the forms of the golden age of Broadway musicals. A large element of this design for me was incorporating toy theatre in a meaningful way playing with the scale of the world the ducks were in where they both tower over Boston when in the sky but are also very small creatures comparative to humans. Due to the various locations I then wanted the container for this playing of scale to be a map of Boston the characters could then move around.
