Matilda
February 2024
Quincy Community Theatre

Music and Lyrics by Tim Minchin and Book by Dennis Kelly

Note: Photos Taken Before Completion of Set/Opening
The musical's narrative centers on Matilda Wormwood, a precocious five-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis, who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life.

When approaching Matilda what was central to me was the context that is was a play about a community of children being put on by primarily kids for their community. Making a world that fit into a child's fantastical view was paramount. I wanted a world that felt as whimsical as Roald Dahl's books with Quentin Blake's sketches made me feel as a kid. Making the container feel like Matilda's world was focused on the library imagery of whimsical curve bookcases tied with brutalist military fences to reference the school and the Trunchbull.

My favorite part of the design was how it was able to get the community involved. All the books on the set including the false pro of book pages came from donated books from people in Quincy. The quote on the chalkboard downstage are all chosen and written out by the cast and production team from Quincy, Illinois.
