Hangar Theatre | Ithaca, NY
Musical by Sarah Hammond
Pete the Cat is a TYA Musical inspired by the book series created by Kimberly & James Dean. The story following a rock n roll cat named Pete becoming a house cat, and helping his new boy Jimmy discover his own creativity of painting through wacky high jinx, including traveling to multiple locations on a VW bus.

The production was done in an outdoor venue as a part of the Hangar's Kid-stuff series in which the show is built and teched in a week and a half.

Pete the Cat is a very colorful book series with backgrounds that are often liminal space that allowed for a lot of creative play with the set. The team was interested in Pete's use of the word "groovy" and use of a VW bus setting him in the psychedelic aesthetic of the late 60's/early 70's. As such the set was heavily inspired by the design elements of the time, digging into the looks of band posters from that era. The idea of band posters because a form of communication to represent where Jimmy and Pete travel in the VW bus, and the world was kept abstracted to allow for transitions in location, with milk crates being primarily used to represent furniture, as they are commonly used in record stores to store records as well as referencing the wives tale of cats enjoying milk.
